Asmir Begovic reacts as Everton clash v Burnley gets postponed

Asmir Begovic has reacted on Twitter after Everton had their Boxing Day clash against Burnley postponed following the Premier League’s decision to accept their request.

The Toffees currently have just nine senior team players available for selection due to injuries and Covid-19 infection, and Rafa Benitez was baffled yesterday (23 December) after their first request was knocked back.

Blues goalkeeper Begovic saw the funny side to the whole situation, taking to his personal Twitter account to respond after the authorities made a U-turn today.

He said: “Was looking forward to playing up front.”

Good news

Benitez would not have been forced to play the goalie as a striker had the game not gotten postponed, but he would have had no choice than to feature a lot of his youngsters at Turf Moor.

Injuries have continually decimated the Everton squad all campaign, and having some of the players contract the virus proved to be the final straw.

They host Newcastle United on 30 December, and it remains to be seen whether the game would still proceed given the situation of things at Finch Farm.

The recent postponement is a massive boost for a player like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, though.

Everton

He was scheduled to make a return against Burnley having been out of action since featuring in only the opening three league games of 2021-22.

The England international would most likely not have started, but he now has additional days to work on his sharpness, and should the Newcastle match gets postponed too, he will be more than ready to hit the ground running in January.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting January loan-to-buy bid for centre-mid hailed by Jack Grealish last month.
