View: Ben Chilwell injury opens up path for Lucas Digne to join Chelsea

Everton defender Lucas Digne could find himself in a different shade of blue come January after it was reported that Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell won’t play again this season.

Chilwell has suffered a knee injury and was diagnosed with a partial ACL tear – something that has now been reported will need surgery on the injury and could keep him out for the season.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have previously been linked with a move for Digne and it now seems as though there is a real possibility for the move to happen.

With a new left-back now necessary at Stamford Bridge, the possibility of Everton letting theirs join is surely higher now.

Digne and Rafa Benitez have had a massive falling out at Goodison Park which has seen the Frenchman not feature in any of the last three games.

Benitez tried to put the fires out publicly, but it seems as though a decision has been made and that the 29-year-old will leave the club. He has already agreed a move for Dynamo Kyiv man Vitaly Mykolenko to arrive in January as a replacement.

There have been some suggestions over a loan move to Italy, with Inter Milan and Napoli both linked but a move to Chelsea now would seemingly make a lot of sense.

A loan deal would allow Chelsea not to spend too much money on a temporary replacement, while Everton would be able to get rid of a player that clearly doesn’t want to be there anymore.

It would also mean Chelsea are ever so slightly weaker when they play the Toffees in the Premier League, which would obviously be a boost too.

For Digne he would be able to stay in the best league in the world, which would certainly be better for his family and playing in the Champions League would be a boost for his chances of making the World Cup squad too.

Chilwell’s injury is a blow for Chelsea, but it could open up the door for a new chapter in the career of Lucas Digne and Everton.
