Kevin Campbell: Philippe Coutinho would be smart signing for Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has insisted that Everton would be adding a “star” to their ranks if they signed Barcelona playmaker Phillipe Coutinho in January.

The ex-Toffees talisman believes it would be nothing like the James Rodriguez signing which ended in tears at Goodison Park.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison Park, Campbell admitted Coutinho having Premier League experience makes it worthwhile.

The Brazilian has been linked with Everton, with Fabrizio Romano sharing his priority is to stay in Europe – something Campbell believes can only benefit the Toffees.

“Coutinho knows the Premier League,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“He’s been across the way at Liverpool, he was a really, really top player for them. He’s gone to Barcelona, not quite worked out the way he liked.

“He possesses the quality and focus to be a star in the Premier League – I don’t think it’s a James Rodriguez situation, I think he’s more accustomed to the Premier League.

“So, if it can happen, it’s another threat for an Everton side who could add to their attacking prowess.”

With Financial Fair Play rules tight around the club, there would be a limited risk in making a loan offer for the Brazilian.

Coutinho has yet to complete a full 90 minutes in La Liga this season, making 12 appearances and scoring twice.
