Commentator astonished at Calvert-Lewin penalty miss in Everton v Brighton

Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed from the spot in the first half as Everton trail 2-0 at the break at Goodison Park.

In the 24th minute of the game, Calvert-Lewin, who makes his first start since August, blasted it over from the spot, after Anthony Gordon earned a spot-kick.

Premier League Production commentator Jacqui Oatley said it was “extraordinary” to see Calvert-Lewin missing the spot.

Oatley said during the game: “Extraordinary. Calvert-Lewin so reliable from the spot.

“He already scored twice from these positions. He couldn’t make it work.”

Disaster

In fairness, the Toffees striker has been out for a long time. He has looked rusty but he has wasted a golden opportunity to bring the host back into the game.

Gordon is fouled in the box, straight after Everton conceded their second goal. After a VAR check, John Brooks further checked the pitchside monitor to award Everton a lifeline to get back into the game.

The Toffees have made a disastrous start once again, with Rafa Benitez horribly getting wrong with his tactics.

The five defence didn’t look cohesive at all, while there are a lack of grit and control in the middle of the park. It allowed Brighton to enjoy more space and create some very good chances.

However, the second goal conceded by Everton was unacceptable. It was a poor defending from them, with not a single player marking Dan Burn, who rose to head in with ease.

Brighton nearly got another goal but Jordan Pickford superbly pushed away a low Adam Lallana drive.

In other Everton news, Mike Parry has slammed the Everton board, calling them “shambolic”.
