Guillem Balague ridicules Everton fans, Alan Myers responds

Popular Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has labelled Everton fans as “short-sighted” for their constant criticism of Rafa Benitez.

The Toffees have been struggling badly in the league, managing just three points from 36, but the Everton board are happy to back Benitez in the transfer market.

The Merseyside club have already signed Vitaliy Mykolenko while they are close to completing a deal for Nathan Patterson as well [The Athletic].

Balague has suggested that the “two big investments” clearly show that the squad lacks quality.

He wrote on Twitter: “Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko. Two big investments for Everton and (an) indication of two things – a) Squad lacks quality b) Board trusts the manager to improve it.

“Short-sighted so-called Everton fans seem to gloat after every defeat. I never understood that reaction.”

Sky Sports journalist, Alan Myers, has come up with a sharp riposte. He defended the fan base by saying “nobody should tell them how they feel”, especially when the results have been below par.

He responded: “It’s a fair assumption to make that Benitez is not responsible for all of the issues at Everton, far from it. But, three points from 36 means he has to take criticism, Everton fans don’t need insults or lectures, they need a team that wins, nobody should tell them how they feel.”

Myers spot on

Benitez may not have been a popular choice, but fans are still willing to stick with him and give him a chance.

However, the results are nowhere near acceptable. The Spaniard cannot use injuries as an excuse every time and hide his own mistakes.

Yes, it’s a fact that the squad needs investment, the squad is lacking in quality, and that injury to key players has made life difficult, but surely Benitez should have got more out of the players he has at his disposal.

Balague, obviously, is trying to defend Benitez here, but he is ignoring the fact that the Spaniard inherited a decent squad – one win in 12 Premier League games shouldn’t be accepted anywhere.

Benitez wants to implement a new system at the club, but is it really working? He is known for his tactical acumen, but Everton’s defence has been all over the place in recent games.

The results need to improve and that too quickly.
