Kevin Ratcliffe: Everton were ‘Bang average’ v Brighton

Everton suffered a 3-2 defeat against Brighton on Sunday in the Premier League, and former player, Kevin Ratcliffe was far from impressed.

Despite fielding a five-man defence, Everton went 2-0 down at the break which didn’t leave many surprised.

The performance did improve in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to prevent yet another defeat on home turf.

Ratcliffe has shared his strong reaction on his personal Twitter account, saying the Toffees were “bang average” during the game.

He wrote: “Bang average and that’s at our best. Simply not good enough.”

Ratcliffe is absolutely spot on here.

Rafa Benitez has used injuries as an excuse to save himself from criticism so far, but one win in 12 Premier League games is simply unacceptable.

The Toffees board is likely to back him in the transfer market, but the results have to improve. As of now, there’s no evidence that the Spaniard can turn things around.

The players are making individual errors that show there’s a lack of conviction and confidence in the team.

Benitez has made a reputation for himself for being someone who is tactically astute. His game plan borders on defensive solidarity, and yet the zonal marking system is proving to be a disaster at Everton.

Either the players are failing to his grapple his vision, or he is failing to create a system that works best with these sets of players.

This constant stooping to mediocrity has to stop, and quickly.
