Gary Lineker sends well wishes to new Everton board member

Graeme Sharp was yesterday (Wednesday) announced as part of the Everton club board in a non-executive role and his former teammate Gary Lineker has voiced his support.

Lineker played just one season with Sharp as a fearsome striking partnership that saw the Toffees challenge for the First Division in 1985-86.

The 61-year-old took to Twitter to extend his good wishes to his former friend at Goodison Park, agreeing with a previous tweet from journalist Henry Winter

Winter’s tweet read: “Graeme Sharp appointed to Everton board as a non-executive director. Good appointment. Brings footballing experience and expertise, cares passionately for the club and knows the standards they should be aspiring to.”

To which, the Match of the Day presenter quote tweeted saying: “Agreed. Having had the good fortune to have played alongside him for a season, I can confirm all of the below. Wish him well.”

Connections lie deep

Lineker was an instant hit with the Goodison Park faithful during the 1985-86 season as he scored 38 goals in 52 games across all competitions.

Everton reached the FA Cup final that season where Lineker and Sharp were on the losing side but the duo enjoyed a campaign full of goals before the former left Merseyside for Barcelona for £2.8million.

While the two enjoyed very different careers, there is still mutual respect to this day as evidenced by Lineker’s response to the news of Sharp’s return to Goodison Park.

And his sentiment will be one shared by many Evertonians who have long felt disconnected from their board.

The appointment of Sharp, a fan favourite with Toffees supporters, is likely to pick up the spirits of those in and around the club after a poor 2021-22 season so far on the pitch.

These relationships will have also been helped by the quick nature of Everton’s first two January signings Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson.

In other Everton news, a report suggests Rafael Benitez and Farhad Moshiri have clashed over one of the club’s January targets.
