Journalist heaps praise of Everton defender Godfrey after FA Cup win

Everton edged past Hull City in the FA Cup on Saturday and one player, in particular, has come in for praise.

The daunting prospect of having to mark six foot five inch Tom Eaves stood in the way of Ben Godfrey but the England international stood up to the test.

The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland singled the 23-year-old out for praise on his personal Twitter.

“One of Godfrey’s better games at centre back, I felt. Aggression in and out of possession. Dealt well with Eaves in main,” Boyland wrote.

A Different Prospect

Eaves isn’t the kind of player Premier League defenders are used to playing.

He has no express pace to burst in behind the backline but his height, strength and hold up play makes him one of the toughest opponents to face.

Despite that though, the way Godfrey handled his massive aerial threat was a lesson to any defender.

Everton

There was never a moment where the 23-year-old looked panicked and even when Eaves was able to hold the ball up, he wasn’t able to then turn and affect the game in the final third.

Rafael Benitez’s side may have conceded twice, but the Tigers rarely threatened in a game largely dominated by the Toffees.

The command of the defence that Godfrey possesses should stand him in good stead in the future as he looks to secure his place in Benitez’s team.
