Everton defender Lucas Digne set for Aston Villa medical despite Newcastle bid

Newcastle have reportedly raised their offer to sign Everton left-back Lucas Digne, but he is still set to complete a move to Aston Villa.

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, the France international could have his medical as early as Wednesday ahead of his imminent move to Villa Park.

As things stand, he is closer to finalising a switch to join Steven Gerrard and co in Birmingham.

Plettenberg said, via his personal Twitter account, “News on Digne: Newcastle have raised their offer in the last few hours. But the medical at Aston Villa could take place in the next two days already. Digne‘s move to Villa is close to being done.”

Given Newcastle’s super rich owners, their bid was certainly more than what Villa are offering for Digne.

However, it seems to have come a little too late as he’s already made his mind up to move to Villa Park.

It would’ve been nice for the Toffees if they managed to get an astronomical fee for the France international.

Not only would they be able to pay for his replacement Vitaliy Mykolenko, but it would also take care of Nathan Patterson’s transfer fee.

However, as things stand, he is set to join Villa for what’s believed to be a fee in the region of £25million. [talkSPORT]

While that isn’t less, given Newcastle’s interest, they could’ve driven the price up to £30million which they initially seemed to want for him.
