Everton star Andros Townsend opens up on injury return risk

Andros Townsend came off the bench to score the winner for Everton in their 3-2 victory over Hull City on Saturday evening (January 8).

The Blues advanced into the fourth round of the competition thanks to a stunning strike in extra time by the winger.

Townsend made his emphatic return after breaking his foot against Crystal Palace last month.

“Listen I was out for a month or so, so it was nice to come back and contribute.” He told Liverpool ECHO.

“It’s a weird one because it’s an injury where I felt all right from minute one, but I was told there was a crack so I needed to be patient.

“I’d be banging down the manager’s door telling him I’m ready and, rightly so, he was telling me to be patient and it wasn’t worth the risk.

“I’m thankful to him for believing in me and getting me on the pitch today [Saturday] when there is a big risk. Thankfully, I was able to repay the favour.

“I’ve got a broken bone in my foot, bones usually take about six or eight weeks to heal. But I feel okay so I’ve just been banging on the manager’s door telling him I’m ready to play.”

Strength in numbers

The return of a senior attacker will be music to Everton fans ears. But will he earn back his position in the team?

Anthony Gordon has been magnificent in recent weeks, potentially being one of the Blues’ best players. The youngster has shown just how ready he is to play in the first team with goals and assists in recent performances whilst leaving everything on the pitch as he covers every blade of grass down the right-hand side.

Demarai Gray is another who could keep the 30-year-old on the side lines for a little longer. The former Leicester man has been the Toffees best player this season and maybe even the signing of the season after coming in for a mere £1.7 million.

Regardless of whether he starts, Townsend can play a vital role in this Everton team. He is a great option from the bench and gives Rafa Benitez the chance to rotate his players.
