GN view: Andy van der Meyde saying 'don't do it' of Everton move could haunt Anwar El Ghazi

Anwar El Ghazi is closing in on a move to Everton but there may be a risk if the move is completed thanks to Andy van der Meyde’s remarks.

On the Dutch television show VTBL in 2019 the former Goodison winger strongly tried to convince his Dutch compatriot against following in his foot steps.

The Aston Villa attacker had been linked with a move to Merseyside after his loan spell in Birmingham and had been asked about joining up with then-Director of Football Marcel Brands.

“Don’t do it. Don’t. Do. It. Everton, what a [swear] club,” van der Meyde begged El Ghazi, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“”Please don’t go to Everton because it would destroy you. Just look at me!”

Doubt in his mind

It is unlikely to amuse Everton fans to hear their former player refer to the club in that way, and they will be even less happy were the mooted move to end up following the same path.

If the 26-year-old completes a move during this window he would be coming into a side that is struggling under Rafael Benitez.

A positive outlook would be key if results continue to not go Everton’s way and if the potential new arrival starts to doubt he made the right decision, van der Meyde’s advice may creep into the back of his mind.

It is a small point and the ex-Lille and Ajax man will of course have his own views, but the mental side of things around a club that is fighting near the foot of the table is often key.

Physical ability becomes virtually useless if the belief that it will work is lost, so negative thoughts have to be fought against.

It is perhaps no surprise that ex-Toffee van der Meyde looks back on his time at the club so unfavourably considering it coincided with a particularly difficult period in his personal life (BBC) which spilled over into his work.

If negotiations lead to a move from Villa Park then everyone involved, and surely van der Meyde himself, will hope things work out better for El Ghazi.

In other Everton news, the club have reportedly made contact with this European star’s agent.
