Bernard reacts as Lucas Digne leaves Everton for Villa

French left-back Lucas Digne has joined Aston Villa from Everton on Thursday, and his former teammate at Goodison Park, Bernard, has reacted.

The ex-Barcelona full-back took to his personal Instagram account today (13 January) to send a message to the fans, claiming “sometimes it only takes one person from outside to destroy a beautiful love affair”, and Bernard had something to say about it in the comments section.

The Brazilian attacker, 29, left the Toffees for Sharjah in July 2021 after three seasons on Merseyside, and he made his mind known about some people at the club.

Bernand said: “Perhaps not everyone understands what goes on behind the scenes. I love Everton as you do too, but unfortunately there are people who don’t want the same goal as most.

“I love you bro, and I’ll be rooting for you, wherever you go!”

Subtle digs

Both Digne and Bernand are not going to say exactly who they are referring to anytime soon, but could their subtle digs be aimed at Rafa Benitez?

The Brazilian made a similar comment upon leaving last summer, and it is clear that things did not go the way he had imagined.

Digne had only put pen to paper on an extension a year ago, but the arrival of Benitez has changed all that.

Having already brought in a replacement in Vitalii Mykolenko and pocketed £25million for the Frenchman, it can be argued that Everton have not lost much.

However, it appears more players could still fall out with the Toffees boss.

It will be interesting to see what happens going forward, but the Spaniard is clearly not doing much to win the fans over, and he cannot afford any more major exits.

Digne could hit the ground running at Villa Park and prove himself as one of the best left-backs in the land at the Midlands outfit, and Everton will hope that Mykolenko can do so sooner rather than later.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting January loan-to-buy bid for centre-mid hailed by Jack Grealish last month.
