Development expected in coming hours as Everton contact Cannavaro

Everton have recently spoken with Fabio Cannavaro as they search for Rafa Benitez’s successor, according to Italian outfit Gazzetta Dello Sport.

16th-placed Toffees are open to giving the former centre-back the job in order to save their campaign, and developments are expected in the next few hours.

Cannavaro, 48, is currently unattached after leaving Chinese Super League outfit Guangzhou Evergrande in September 2021, and he has now joined the list of the managers on the club’s radar.

Wise choice?

While the former Real Madrid ace once won the Ballon d’Or, his managerial career is yet to take off and he does not have European experience.

He has only managed in the Middle East and Asia till date, taking charge of the likes of Guangzhou, Al-Nassr, Tianjin Quanjian and the China national team.

Cannavaro has managed to win the China League One, Chinese Super League and the Chinese FA Super Cup, but are those enough to show that he can do a good job at Everton?

The Goodison Park outfit cannot afford to make another mistake as they look to appoint their sixth manager in six years, and it is why another gamble is the last thing they need.

Everton want to be playing European football and challenging for major silverware, and recruiting someone with the experience when it comes to those two should be their priority.

It is uncertain who they will end up with right now, but Cannavaro clearly does not have what it takes to take them to the next level, and not many fans will approve of such a move.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting January loan-to-buy bid for centre-mid hailed by Jack Grealish last month.
