Fabio Cannavaro and Wayne Rooney neck and neck for Everton manager role – report
Fabio Cannavaro and Wayne Rooney are neck and neck in the race to become the next Everton new manager, according to Il Matino.
The Italian World Cup winner has already had an interview with the Toffees about the role [Telegraph], while Rooney is earmarked for one once the club receives permission from his current club Derby County [Telegraph].
According to Italian outlet Il Matino though, Cannavaro held ‘long talks’ with the Blues today [Jan 20th] and is believed to be in pole position with Rooney as the top candidate for the role.

Frank Lampard is also expected to be part of the process having been interviewed too, but it seems as though the Toffees are narrowing in on their preferred choice.
The report states that some senior players wouldn’t ‘support’ Rooney as manager and that could lead to Cannavaro becoming an ‘independent choice’ to take over.
Gamble
If Everton are putting their hopes and survival chances in the hands of one of Wayne Rooney or Fabio Cannavaro then they’re taking a very big risk.
Neither manager has ever coached at the highest level in Europe and while both were stellar players in their prime, this is a totally different ask.

Both are relatively inexperienced, although Cannavaro has been coaching for much longer, but the idea of an ‘independent choice’ isn’t a bad one.
It could be seen that someone with no previous affiliation to the club or it’s players is the perfect reset and would present a great opportunity to really start fresh.
With Duncan Ferguson in charge for ‘upcoming games’, the Toffees don’t need to rush into a decision just yet and can think it through properly.
