Dominic King slates Everton pursuit of Fabio Cannavaro
Everton considering Fabio Cannavaro to replace Rafael Benitez as their next manager makes no sense, according to Dominic King.
The Daily Mail journalist has questioned why the Italian has never managed in Europe despite a coaching career approaching a decade.
On his personal Twitter account, King wrote: “Fabio Cannavaro was a giant of footballer, in the highest bracket. But his managerial career reads Guangzhou (twice), Al-Nassr, Tianjin Quanjian and China.
“Why has no European club taken him (managing since 2014)? Truly, there is no rhyme or reason to what Everton are doing”.
Left field candidate
The Telegraph reported that the World Cup-winning captain had been interviewed for the job and that the shortlist may be down to three, with Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard the other candidates.
It is perhaps a sign of the lack of long-term planning during owner Farhad Moshiri’s time at the club that the three men on that list are relatively unproven, with only the ex-Chelsea boss having any Premier League managerial experience.
The addition of the former Juventus and Real Madrid defender was a surprise due to his lack of involvement in Europe, let alone England, as a coach.

There is a sense that the Toffees ownership is clutching at straws now with the mooted names, and they may be better off simply allowing caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson work for the rest of the season and revisit the question in the summer.
Frank Lampard has been out of work for a year since leaving Stamford Bridge and is likely to be receptive at this point to interest from any club of a size that he feels is big enough.
And Goodison hero Rooney would probably not consider stepping into the breach were it not for his life-long connection to the club.
Unless Moshiri has identified something no other top club has with Cannavaro it seems the interest may be another mistake.
In other Everton news, the club reportedly want to sign this player from a PL rival.
