Alan Shearer blasts Richarlison in Everton defeat vs Aston Villa

Alan Shearer blasted Everton forward Richarlison for his role in the goal that saw the team lose to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

The Toffees fell to a 1-0 defeat in Duncan Ferguson’s first game as interim manager at Goodison Park, thanks to Emiliano Buendia’s brilliant header on the stroke of half-time.

Richarlison was the man tasked with marking the front post area where the goal came from, and Alan Shearer blamed the Brazilian while analysing the game on Match of the Day for allowing Buendia to score.

“First and foremost Villa work it really well,” he said. “They get eight players in there and it’s good, but from Everton’s point of view again it’s not good enough. Ten goals conceded now from set pieces.

“Richarlison cannot allow Buendia into that position like that. Stop him, block him, you cannot allow that.

“Yes it’s a good ball in, yes it’s well worked, yes it’s a brilliant header but Everton have to do better in those circumstances or it’s going to keep hurting them like Dunc said. It’s something they have to improve on.”

Same old problems

New manager at the helm, but it was the same old problems for Everton in the defeat to Steven Gerrard’s side.

The team were aggressive and played at a high pace throughout, but they lacked any real tactical nous on the pitch and didn’t really create any clear-cut chances during the game.

Defensively they had small lapses of concentration, such as Richarlison’s, and it’s those moments that have cost them all season and see them in the position they’re in.

Everton currently sit in 16th place in the Premier League with just one win from their last 14 games.

They’re currently just four points above the relegation zone, although they have games in hand over most of the teams around them.

They need to start picking up points though and soon, with Newcastle and Norwich winning games recently and closing the gap.
