Wayne Rooney could make last-ditch play for Everton job today
Wayne Rooney may change his mind about the manager’s job at Everton if his former club really wants to hire him, according to The Mirror.
The newspaper reports that the Blues will decide today (Friday) who they want to appoint as Rafa Benitez’s successor with Vitor Pereira, Frank Lampard and Duncan Ferguson the contenders.
It is understood that Derby boss and ex-Toffees forward Rooney initially rejected the chance to be the next manager at Goodison Park.

However, The Mirror claims that “Rooney could still make a late play for the job if he feels the club really want him”. However, that is deemed as unlikely right now.
U-Turn
Rooney’s done an impressive job at Derby County – but he’s also done that with absolutely no pressure.
While there’s obvious pressure in the fact that he’s working with a squad that’s held back massively by Derby’s financial issues, there’s still no expectation upon him to drag the Rams out of the Championship’s relegation battle.
Despite a 21-point deduction, Derby are off the bottom of the table and have a neutral goal difference. They’ve also won four and drawn one of their last six Championship fixtures.
But Derby’s form could be seen as simply a flash in the pan or a fluke. And Everton need to hire a manager who they are confident of being successful with them.
We’re not having all of this ‘he knows the club’ rubbish. Rooney has spent one of the last 18 years at Goodison Park. If anyone ‘knows the club’, it’s Ferguson.
However, Ferguson has been at Goodison for so long that we’re not confident about him being able to change things while Lampard and Pereira worry us too.
There are no good options here. Simply the least worst.
In other Everton news, the Blues want to sign this “fantastic” central midfielder before the transfer deadline.
