Everton ace Anthony Gordson has to start every game for one reason

Everton began their reign under Frank Lampard with a stunning 4-1 victory over Brentford in the FA Cup but it wasn’t a goalscorer who caught the eye.

Rather it was 20-year-old academy graduate Anthony Gordon who impressed Lampard as he got off to a winning start at Goodison Park.

The local lad has become a regular feature in the Toffees’ first-team this season under Rafael Benitez and now he can push on even further with Lampard at the helm.

“I’m really excited,” Lampard said about Gordon after the game, as quoted by The Telegraph. “I have been watching Anthony this season as an outsider, a natural, and loved things about his game. When you come to them you don’t want to make too many judgements.

“But seeing him close-up this week, he has great quality and loves this club. It oozes out of him, which the fans love.

“And he has a great attitude, all the attributes to do what he wants in the game. I won’t jump on him after one game and give him something to live up to. But he has what it takes and we saw that.

“The tackle for the third goal was amazing. The attitude he shows and the love for the club is something for me to work with and harness and help. Be a service to him. He is a young player and can go a long way.”

Lampard is right, the fans do love him and it isn’t because he’s going to become a world-beater but because he cares.

It might surprise you how many football fans won’t get overly upset if their side loses as long as the players on the pitch have given everything to try and win the game.

Ultimately, that is all Everton fans have been asking for all season and Benitez couldn’t get it out of them.

Lampard certainly will but to do that, he needs to give Gordon a highly regular starting spot in his team to be the inadvertent leader he has suddenly become.
