Keith Hackett reacts to Brentford penalty incident v Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...

Keith Hackett has insisted that the officials got it spot on to hand Brentford their penalty against Everton on Saturday afternoon.

The ex-Premier League official had no complaints as Ivan Toney was brought down by Jordan Pickford in the box.

The striker picked himself up and dusted himself down to fire home, but the Toffees went on to easily win 4-1 in Frank Lampard’s opener.

“I didn’t have a problem with it,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“The referee was firm in the decision, and for me, it was.”

Wild.

Pickford has been sensational since arriving at Goodison Park years ago and plays with his heart on his sleeve every single week.

Although that is mainly positive, it also has its downsides, with this penalty just an example of that over the weekend.

Another recent example was his challenge on Virgil Van Dijk last season, which nearly got him into hot water.

Lampard wouldn’t change that, though, with that passion exactly what we need right now at the club to keep on picking up these kinds of results.

We don’t have any complaints with the decision, and despite it being dispatched, the Toffees still cruised to victory when in the past it may have got their heads down.
