Chris Sutton slams ‘awful’ Everton star Yerry Mina for mistake v Newcastle

Chris Sutton slammed Everton defender Yerry Mina for his “awful” pass that nearly gifted Newcastle United a goal.

The Blues started Frank Lampard’s second game in charge very nervously with the result at St. James’ Park likely to have a huge impact on the relegation scrap.

The Toffees could lift themselves to 14th in the table tonight but must exercise caution with below four of the bottoms five in action tonight also looking to change their fortunes.

“Frank Lampard in his technical area telling his players to calm down,” Sutton said on BT Sport

“An awful pass from Mina, well read by Jonjo Shelvey.

“He’s had a slow start to the game, Mina.”

Dog fight

As important as it is to win for Everton, it is just as – if not- more important not to lose as the two sides go into the break level at 1-1.

Newcastle are coming off the back of a hugely successful January and there was a clear feeling around the ground that they could get at this Blues team with Lampard having so little time to work with his players.

Everton

It was a very cagey first half with from the Blues who showed good spells, but Lampard will want them to look after the ball much more and play their football.

Anthony Gordon was the Toffees main threat and could have scored if he was slipped through after some impressive link up play with Richarlison.

The Blues need to look to get the ball to the 21-year-old more who caused the Toon problems at every possible opportunity.

A huge second half performance is needed with both sides desperate to take all three points in their fight to avoid relegation.

In other Blues news, Kevin Campbell hopes Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek’s form returns at Everton.
