Everton should have gone for Wayne Rooney as manager – Louis Saha

Louis Saha believes Everton made the wrong decision in their appointment of Frank Lampard as manager.

Duncan Ferguson, Vitor Pereira and Wayne Rooney were among a long list of candidates tipped to replace Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park.

The former Toffees striker believes Wayne Rooney would have been the best choice considering his rich history with the club.

“I would have seen Rooney as the more logical choice as he knows the club,” Saha told William Hill.

“Lampard has experience at Chelsea, but Rooney would have a good understanding of who to talk to at the club, what he could receive, with a stronger support in many ways.

“It was a choice by Everton, they made it, and that’s it. As someone who respects the player, I’ve seen the job Rooney is doing and what he’s dedicated at Derby. I hope he gets the job he wants later as he’s shown great class.”

One for the future

Rooney wasn’t ready for the job, it’s as simple as that.

He is currently where Lampard is several years ago, picking up experience in his first proper managerial job in the Championship with Derby.

The former Blues attacker wasn’t ready for the job which is likely to be the reason why he snubbed it – not through disrespect but rather not wanting to make a hash of his dream job having taken it way too early.

The 36-year-old will undoubtedly get his crack at managing at Goodison Park later in his managerial career but first he must gain the vital experience.

His amazing work at Derby shouldn’t be overlooked but Rooney is doing a terrific job and probably learnt from Lampard’s mistakes as the definitive reason to stay with the Rams.

When Lampard joined Chelsea, he had a terrific start, but his lack of experience saw him sacked before the end of his second season. He is now our manager and hopefully he has learnt from that experience.
