Wayne Rooney shares whether he wants to manage Everton in the future

Wayne Rooney has admitted that he wants to become Everton manager ‘one day’, despite rejecting their advances over the role last month.

Rooney was one of the top candidates to take over from Rafa Benitez in January after he was sacked as manager, but rejected the chance to interview for the role out of loyalty to Derby [The Mirror].

Speaking to Sky Sports at the world premiere of his new documentary ‘Rooney’, the former Blues striker revealed that despite that rejection he still hopes to hold the role one day in the future.

“At the minute my focus is on Derby County and us staying up but Manchester United [and] Everton are two clubs that are very close to me,” he said.

“Hopefully one day in the future, if I can manage one of those two clubs, then it’d be a great achievement for me.”

Inevitable

Considering the way the most recent process went, it’s no surprise that Rooney will eventually be linked with the role again.

The job he has done at Derby so far has been exceptional but he is still very early on in his managerial career, so taking over at Everton with the situation they’re currently in would’ve been really tough.

Eventually though, the job will open up again and he will likely be more ready for that opportunity at that point.

If he continues on his current trajectory, considering the support he received from fans and pundits alike this time around, he will likely be the favourite for the job.

It would then be full circle, as the club’s greatest ever academy product returns for a third stint at the club to lead them as manager. Fairytale stuff.
