Frank Lampard blown away by Everton winger Alex Iwobi

Frank Lampard has showered praise on Everton winger Alex Iwobi after his impressive performance against Leeds United.

The 25-year-old was brilliant against the Whites on Saturday [12 February] as the Toffees registered a 3-0 win in the Premier League clash at Goodison Park.

Lampard has suggested that Iwobi has impressed him in training and that it’s a fresh start for him at the club.

Everton

“I’m open minded to players, all of the squad, and what Alex has done is he’s trained at a great level,” said Lampard, as quoted by Liverpool Echo.

“He’s a quiet lad, keeps his head down, trains with talent, trains with work ethic, and the way we changed the formation of the team and played with wide-men as we did, Alex has just sort of demanded a place in the team with his performance.

“He just needs to believe in himself and I said it to him before the game. I certainly believe in him from the things I’ve seen but the work ethic side of his game he showed in that role.”

Fresh start

It happens. A new manager comes with a new system and new ideas, and players get a chance to impress him.

The best thing about Lampard is that he hasn’t joined Everton with pre-conceived ideas about players. He is willing to give everyone a chance and it is up to the players to grab it.

Jonjoe Kenny is another example. The full-back was deemed surplus to requirements at the club, but he is trying his best to prove a point to his new manager.

Everton

Iwobi fared poorly under Rafa Benitez, failing to make an impact in seven Premier League starts he previously made before this game.

However, he looked like a different player against Leeds. Probably, Lampard has given him the confidence that he required.

He attempted four shots and made five key passes. He made three tackles and one interception as well, according to Whoscored, capping off a brilliant all-around performance.
