Everton defender Mason Holgate must seize the opportunity now and prove a point to his manager, Frank Lampard.
The new Toffees boss has made it clear [12 February] that it’s a clean slate for all his players, and it is up to them to make full use of it.
Alex Iwobi impressed in the last game against Leeds United, and Holgate must make a strong impact to give his manager a tough selection headache.
The Toffees are currently without Yerry Mina who is set to be absent for around two months. Ben Godfrey is also currently out injured.
Against Southampton, Lampard is likely to use the pair of Holgate and Michael Keane at the back, according to Liverpool Echo.
The 25-year-old was linked with a move away in the January transfer window. He has struggled for regular games this season, and Newcastle United inquired about a loan move for the player.
The Toffees didn’t entertain such ideas as they wanted him at the club. However, the situation could change in the summer, especially if Lampard turns it around.
The defence is one area that he might look to bolster. Lampard could get rid of below par or fringe players and make some quality additions instead.
Holgate was once described by Carlo Ancelotti as a ‘complete’ player but he has certainly dropped down the pecking order.
An opportunity has been presented before him, and he must not let it go. A strong performance against the Saints is required from him.
