Keith Hackett: Advantage for Southampton goal v Everton was referee decision of entire Premier League weekend

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...

Keith Hackett has insisted that Andy Madley made the best decision of the entire Premier League weekend as Everton lost at Southampton.

Advantage was played at St Mary’s which allowed the game to continue and saw Stuart Armstrong open the scoring in the 2-0 defeat.

Ex-Premier League referee, Hackett, admitted that it was a “superb” decision as Everton returned to their poor ways.

“I think the one thing about this referee, he’s showing great maturity on the pitch,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“This was a superb advantage, great game reading. No question, this was the decision of the weekend, great piece of refereeing, and of course, they scored. Terrific when that happens.”

It may have been a good decision to play advantage, but all most of us can think about is the poor performance once again.

The Toffees crashed back to their old ways after that huge win over Leeds last week, and they made it easy.

Madley waved play on as Andre Gomes brought down his man, and despite having more than enough men back, the defending was woeful.

This has to change and is happening far too often, consistency is needed to get us away from the bottom three, and currently, we have none.
