Benitez initially sanctioned exit for Everton ace Jean-Philippe Gbamin

Jean-Philippe Gbamin has ended his nightmare spell at Everton by joining CSKA Moscow on loan on Monday (21 February).

According to reports from The Athletic, the Russian club will pay a “sizeable chunk”, thought to be around 75% of the player’s wages.

He had endured a torrid time at the club, and former manager Rafa Benitez initially sanctioned his exit from the club.

Last chance

Everton paid around £25 million to sign the Ivory Coast midfielder from Mainz as a replacement for fan-favourite Idrissa Gueye.

However, recurrent injuries have restricted his game time, and he only managed just eight appearances for the club.

He has a contract at the Merseyside club till June 2024, and there’s still a lot of time left for him to resurrect his career.

He needs regular game time under his belt to get back to full sharpness after his chronic fitness issues. However, given the circumstances the Toffees are in, it would have been a big gamble to throw into this mix.

With the club in the middle of a relegation battle, throwing in a half-fit rusty player doesn’t make enough sense. The loan move is a smart decision taken by the club.

The door is not completely shut for him. It is up to him now to make the loan move count and prove to his manager that he can still play a big part in his plans.
