Richard Keys blasts disgraceful referee decision in Everton loss v Manchester City

Richard Keys has gone berserk on Twitter after Everton were denied a penalty in their 1-0 defeat at home against Manchester City on Saturday.

Phil Foden’s 82nd-minute goal won the match for Man City at Goodison Park but Frank Lampard’s side should’ve had a penalty in the minutes later when Rodri clearly handled the ball.

Despite a VAR check, referee Paul Tierney’s on-field decision to not award a penalty was upheld, sparking anger from ex-Sky Sports anchor Keys.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on 26 February, Keys said: “That’s a disgrace. Why leave those decisions to VAR? “

“That’s a pen a pen a pen all day long.

“How on earth is that not given?

“Go and take a look ref and make your own mind up – not be told by VAR – and we want to hear the conversation at the monitor.”

Disgraceful

While Keys is one of the more outspoken and controversial voices in football, he’s usually spot on about VAR.

What on earth was that decision on Saturday?

Rodri clearly touched the ball with his arm in the penalty area after moving his arm towards the ball.

How can VAR not decide that was a clear and obvious error by Tierney?

We can understand why a referee might miss something on the pitch because Rodri did have his back to the official.

However, there’s a monitor beside the pitch to review incidents a late penalty that could have levelled the scores was massive.

Tierney should have put that in his own hands but VAR has once again not been used effectively.

What’s the point in this technology when referees are so hopeless at using it?
