Chris Sutton suggests Frank Lampard is regretting decision to join Everton

Chris Sutton believes Frank Lampard could already be regretting his decision to join Everton after their 5-0 defeat to Tottenham on Monday.

Lampard joined the Blues in January with the aim of steering them away from relegation, but defeat to Spurs has left them with just one league wins in five games since he took over and just point above the relegation zone.

Now Sutton, who was speaking on Radio 5 Live during the game, believes Everton were ‘woeful’ and that Lampard will be questioning his decision to take over from Rafa Benitez.

Everton

“It is woeful from Everton, the first two goals they conceded were massive individual errors and then they tried to play offside for the third.

“What chance do you have when your centre-half volleys into the top corner early on and then it’s followed up by an error from Jordan Pickford?

“If you saw these goals on a Sunday in a pub league you would say it’s woeful. Spurs could’ve had more. If you look at Everton’s body language they don’t believe they can win.

“Frank Lampard may be thinking ‘was it the right decision to take over?’ Everton are a real mess.”

Responsibility

Lampard walked into an absolute mess of a club, granted, but he cannot be absolved of all the blame for their current situation.

Since coming into the club on deadline day he has overseen polar opposites of form and performance at home and away from Goodison Park.

While the players have most certainly not been pulling their weight properly on the pitch, the manager has to take some responsibility for the tactics, team selection and performances as a whole.

It’s far too early to suggest that he’s the wrong man for the job because he simply hasn’t had enough time for anyone to work that out, but in the same way he could be questioning his decision to join, the club could be questioning their decision to bring him in.

For everyone’s sanity, the hope is that he can find a formula that works and can save the club to keep them in the Premier League this season and then we can get a true idea of Lampard from next season with a clean slate.
