Frank Lampard hopes Demarai Gray and Ben Godfrey fit for Wolves clash

Frank Lampard is “hopeful” Everton duo Demarai Gray and Ben Godfrey will be available for Sunday’s clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Goodison Park.

Gray hasn’t featured since the Blues loss at Newcastle after suffering a hip injury with a virus keeping the winger out of the Boreham Wood and Spurs clash after his recovery.

Godfrey has also been out injured for most of the former Chelsea boss’ tenure with a hamstring injury sustained when the Toffees beat Brentford 4-1 in the FA Cup fourth round on 5 February.

Gray has now returned to full training at Finch Farm with Godfrey’s return imminent.

Lampard said: “Demarai has been out for most of the time I’ve been here,” he told evertontv. “He hasn’t been well but he’s back in training now at Finch Farm and is hopefully available for the weekend.

“There’s been some issues and it will be good to get players back. Ben should be fit for us also this week. Hopefully, we’ll have him training with us from Wednesday onwards.”

Huge boost

These are key players coming back. For large parts of the season, Gray has been the Blues’ best player.

He proved himself to be an absolute bargain of a signing with his influence almost single-handedly carrying the team during the early stages of this term.

His absence has been softened by the brilliant form of Anthony Gordon as well as the return of Richarlison but Lampard will be keen to get the winger back into action.

The 25-year-old can be used as an impact player off the bench or give the new boss a great opportunity for rotation upon his return with the Toffees attack simply not good enough last night.

Godfrey has been hugely missed throughout his injury. The 24-year-old established himself as one of the Blues’ key defenders before his injury and Lampard will be absolutely desperate to get him back as soon as possible after the Spurs battering.

He and Yerry Mina is the best centre-back partnership in the squad as proven many times and his return could be vital in keeping this team in the Premier League.
