Steven Pienaar admits it’s ‘shocking’ to see Everton in relegation fight

Former Everton winger Steven Pienaar says it’s ‘shocking’ to see the club battling relegation and has blasted the club’s recruitment, speaking to BBC Sport.

The Blues fell to another defeat at home to Wolves on Sunday afternoon, meaning they’re only outside the relegation zone on goal difference with 12 games remaining in their season.

But after another lacklustre performance, Pienaar admitted that he believes the club have signed some players ‘for the sake of buying them’ and says it will be ‘very hard’ for them to avoid the drop.

“There are so many players with a lot of quality but I think Everton have bought players for the sake of buying them,” he said.

“It is hard to see how they are in the place they are with players who have so much quality. It is shocking to see them fighting at the bottom of the table.

“If they play like they did against Spurs, it’s going to be very hard [for them to stay up].”

Frank Lampard’s reign started so well with a big win over Brentford and a dominant win over Leeds at Goodison, but since then the club have lost every game in the league with their only success coming against National League side Boreham Wood.

The buzz around the team has completely died down and been replaced by serious worry and concern from fans, with relegation now a genuine possibility.

For a club that had aspirations of qualifying for Europe this season, with the quality they have, shocking is the perfect word to summarise their performances this season.

Pienaar was part of the Toffees side that secured fourth-place under David Moyes back in 2005 and this reign under Farhad Moshiri was supposed to bring back times like that, but it’s been the total opposite.

Whether they survive or not, Everton are in dire need of a total reset this summer. That process would be far easier as a Premier League outfit though.
