‘Brilliant’ – Alan Shearer praises Seamus Coleman for what he did for Everton v Newcastle
Alan Shearer was full of praise for Everton captain Seamus Coleman after some ‘brilliant’ defending against Newcastle on Thursday night.
The Toffees are hosting the Magpies at Goodison Park in a huge game with big relegation implications for the home side and have given a good show of themselves in the first-half.
But the skipper was called into action mid-way through the first half when a pass seemed to release Newcastle winger Ryan Fraser on goal, only for Coleman to win the foot race, ball and impress Amazon commentator Shearer all in one swift swoop.

“Brilliant from Seamus Coleman,” he said.
“He had to do that because Ryan Fraser was away, one v one. He tracks him really, really well. It’s a good first time ball from Willock, good run, he just gives him a nudge there, one tackle and the other tackle.”
Experience
Coleman has come under severe pressure in recent weeks for his floundering performances as Everton have struggled, but he was back to his best there.
Despite being 33-years-old these days, the Ireland defender celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with some great acceleration and then two massive challenges to win the ball and get the crowd fired up.

He showed great strength to unbalance Fraser in the build-up too and then the experience to clear the ball away from danger without committing any foul.
It showed what he can still bring to the team with his experience and leadership, and while he’s not quite as good as he was in his prime he’s still got plenty to offer this struggling outfit.
Frank Lampard’s side would be worse off without him right now and they can thank him for not conceding in that instance in what is considered a must-win game.
