Frank Lampard opens up on ‘big issue’ at Everton

Everton will take on Newcastle United in the Premier League on Thursday (17 March) at Goodison Park in what is seen as a must-win game for the Toffees.

The Blues are struggling badly in the league, and they are sitting just above the relegation zone.

Frank Lampard has suggested that he sensed a fear factor around the club the moment he walked in. However, he is not looking to run away from the rebuilding job.

The Toffees boss said as quoted by Liverpool Echo: “It is clearly a big issue here. I am not native to that. From the minute I came here from the period before I came when I was watching from the outside I sensed it.

“There is a fear factor of what may be when the club is not winning games, and it has been up and down now for a few years to whatever degree. Part of my job is to try and help that and solve that. That comes with some communication to the players, to the staff and to the building.”

Vicious cycle

Yes, Lampard is probably right.

On a macro level, there are big issues at the club – money being spent recklessly on average players, frequent change of managers, lack of leadership on and off the pitch, and so on.

This has affected the performance on the pitch. It has reached a point where the players are bereft of any ounce of confidence.

If they concede a goal, they don’t have the courage and mentality to come back strongly and win the game. If it is due to the “fear factor”, then be it.

With every defeat, comes the negativity, it drains the confidence, further culminating in defeat.

How Lampard can improve the situation?

The only way to break this vicious cycle is by winning games. The training work needs to be translated on the pitch. If that doesn’t happen it means either the players cannot grapple the manager’s philosophy or the manager is failing to drill the confidence.

With every win, there grows a sense of belief. At the moment, the Toffees have forgotten how to win games. They still have got time to change their situation.
