Ball picks Michael Keane as MOTM in Everton win v Newcastle

Michael Ball has picked Michael Keane as his man of the match after Everton won 1-0 against Newcastle United on Thursday (17 March) in the Premier League.

A 99th-minute goal from Alex Iwobi has earned a massive victory as the Toffees look to climb up the table and avoid the drop.

The Toffees were pretty average throughout the game, and they were reduced to 10-men when Allan was sent off for a challenge on Allan Saint-Maximin.

The game needed one moment of inspiration, and it was provided by Iwobi. Seamus Coleman made a fantastic interception, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin played out a brilliant pass for Iwobi who slotted home with great composure.

Ball wrote on Twitter: “What a night! Brilliant result. Don’t underestimate Coleman’s interception for the goal, on the front foot nicked it, great link-up play by Dominic Calvert-Lewin & Iwobi. Man of the match – Michael Keane. It’s been a tough season but moments like that are just [expletive] boss!”

Superb

The 29-year-old centre-back has struggled for consistency this season.

He made a poor mistake against Manchester City and allowed Phil Foden to score from close range. Keane was also poor in the 5-0 defeat against Tottenham.

However, he was absolutely fantastic against Newcastle on Thursday night.

He made one tackle, one interception, and seven clearances during the game, according to Who Scored. He also attempted seven long balls.

Everton once again failed to dominate the midfield at home. In fact, they only managed 38% of possession in the entire game and could muster only three shots on target.

At times, the Toffees gave the impression that the players are bereft of confidence, but the manner of the victory surely would give them loads of confidence.
