Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy blown away by James Milner-esque Anthony Gordon after Everton win

Anthony Gordon had Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy waxing lyrical about him after Everton won 1-0 against Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Thursday night.

Evertonians haven’t had much to shout home about this season but Alex Iwobi’s 99th-minute winner over the Magpies and Gordon’s emergence in the senior side have without doubt been two of the massive highlights.

After the win over Newcastle on 17 March, O’Hara and Cundy were raving about 21-year-old Gordon for his performance.

“I have to say, the game was scrappy, the quality wasn’t the best but my god, did they work hard,” said O’Hara, as shown in a video clip on the talkSPORT YouTube account.

“I thought Anthony Gordon was absolutely superb. His energy all over the pitch, what a star he is.”

Cundy then added: “I think there’s a bit of James Milner about him, you know, the way he works incredibly hard, doesn’t give up.

“I remember a young James Milner – I go back that for – but there’s an element that he doesn’t give up, works tirelessly, clearly loves the club.

“I agree with Jamie, I thought Gordon was outstanding.”

Lampard is perfect manager

While Lampard has had some criticism during his managerial career, one thing that the former Chelsea boss has done so well is nurture young talent.

If you look at his Derby side that got to the Championship play-off final in 2019, it boasted talented youngsters like Mason Mount, Harry Wilson and Jayden Bogle.

When he went to Chelsea, Mount continued to shine while Tammy Abraham, Reece James and Fikayo Tomori also got better and better.

Lampard’s great at bringing up young players and you get the feeling that Gordon is his main project within the squad at Goodison Park.

The England Under-21 international has been sensational in what has been a wretched season for the Toffees.

He’s pretty much been the only bright spark all season if you take away a couple of good wins, like the one on Thursday.

Gordon doesn’t deserve to be in a squad that’s playing so badly – just imagine what he could do if we were in the top-half and performing well week after week.
