Ally McCoist reacts to Stuart Attwell incident in first half of Everton v Crystal Palace

Ally McCoist agreed with Stuart Attwell’s to not award Everton a penalty kick in the opening stages against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Frank Lampard’s side face being knocked out of the FA Cup at Selhurst Park with the Eagles 2-0 up at half-time thanks to Marc Guehi’s goal.

However, Guehi’s heart would have been in his mouth in the second minute when he felled Richarlison in the box.

McCoist, however, saw Guehi just win the ball before bringing down the Brazil forward as Attwell made the call.

“I think the ref’s got it spot on,” said McCoist on ITV’s live coverage of the game [20 March, 12:32pm].

“Richarlison might’ve taken a sore one.

“[Guehi] takes a heavy touch [but] he clearly takes the ball there and just catches Richarlison.

“It’s not a penalty for me but it’s a heavy touch there from Guehi.”

He added: “I’m going to say something to you, Clive [Tyldsley]. Guehi’s very fortunate that Richarlison doesn’t get a heavier touch on the ball.

“If he gets a heavier touch on the ball, the challenge would’ve been a stonewall penalty.”

Right decision

Attwell’s had a nightmare with Everton lately but we have to admit that the controversial referee got this decision correct.

Richarlison had plenty of chances in that first half and was involved in two penalty appeals for the Blues.

This was the first one when he was brought down by Guehi but the Palace defender, who later turned goalscorer, did get to the ball just about before he brought down Richarlison.

After that Richarlison also had chances to score but his shooting was off.

In that first half, we probably had the biggest chances but find ourselves 2-0 down.

Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin make a difference if he comes off the bench at half-time?

Let’s face it, he probably cannot do worse than Richarlison has been.

In other Everton news, this Blues star may have just saved £70million for under-fire owner Farhad Moshiri.
