Ian Wright tears Andre Gomes to shreds as footage of Everton star emerges from loss v Crystal Palace

Ian Wright slammed Andre Gomes for his role in Crystal Palace’s second goal in their 4-0 win over Everton at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Jean-Philippe Mateta grabbed the second of the match late in the first half after some slack defending by Frank Lampard’s players.

Speaking at half-time, ex-Palace striker Wright noticed a massive lack of effort from Gomes, 28, as the Blues tracked back and defended.

As you can see in the footage in the tweet above, Gomes is a yard behind Mateta and not doing anywhere near enough to get goal-side of the striker.

Wright was clearly unimpressed by the dawdling Portuguese midfielder.

“I think the midfield has got to do a lot more to get back with [Wilfried Zaha] or Keane’s got to come out quicker,” Wright said on ITV at half-time on Sunday [20 March, 01:26pm].

“Matete… Gomes has got to be tight because he’s got to see the danger.

“He’s ambling in the box, he’s not close enough here and I’m not sure Jordan Pickford could’ve done much about that.

“That’s a good finish from there.”

Everton

Rotten

Gomes is one of numerous Everton players who we’d lose absolutely no sleep if they had their contracts terminated before the weekend is over.

The ex-Barcelona midfielder was absolutely rotten against Palace and his lack of effort for Mateta’s goal sums him up this season.

There was just no effort.

Evertonians have seen it all season and now, with Wright making those comments on terrestrial television, it’s becoming more and more obvious to those away from Goodison Park too.

Gomes isn’t good enough, neither are a lot of those players.

Lampard needs to do something about the sheer lack of effort and complete lack of care from his players.

It’s been something that’s affected the entire squad since the second half of Carlo Ancelotti’s spell and we have to start pointing the finger at senior players at the club.

What’s Seamus Coleman doing to improve the situation? What are Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane doing?

It’s just painful to watch, every week.

In other Everton news, this Blues star may have just saved £70million for under-fire owner Farhad Moshiri.
