Journalist shocked as controversial Wilfried Zaha footage missed by VAR emerges in Everton loss v Crystal Palace
Footage has emerged of Wilfried Zaha handling the ball in the build-up to Crystal Palace’s second goal against Everton in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.
Before Jean-Philippe Mateta’s 41st minute goal, Zaha had the ball out wide but seemed to have hit the ball purposely with his hand.
VAR didn’t review the goal and it stood. You can see the incident in the tweet embedded below.
Liverpool Echo journalist Adam Jones reacted to the footage on his personal Twitter account and was clearly baffled by the handball not being noticed by VAR.
Jones said: “Errrrr, excuse me?
“Didn’t see this on the other side of the pitch at the time but that’s absolutely blatant, isn’t it?”
Shocking
No Everton players appealed to the referee about it, no one working on ITV noticed it and on-the-pitch referee Stuart Attwell didn’t notice it either.
We can accept that, sometimes incidents are missed.
However, what we cannot accept is VAR missing it.
How has that not been picked up? Do they even bother checking goals properly to ensure that incidents aren’t missed?
Zaha very clearly handles the ball and he does it on purpose too.
Everton were in the ascendency before Mateta’s goal and Richarlison had a good chance to score and make it 1-1 just moments before it was 2-0.
That goal should not have stood and Frank Lampard and his players will have every right to feel angry after seeing the footage of Zaha’s blatant handball.
In other Everton news, this Blues star may have just saved £70million for under-fire owner Farhad Moshiri.
