Kevin Campbell: Everton players need to take responsibility for poor results, not Frank Lampard

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes the responsibility for the poor results at Everton lies primarily with the players rather than the manager.

Despite a first league win and first league goal in over a month for the 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Thursday (17 March), the team still lost at home to Wolves four days earlier in the Premier League, and then were dumped out of the FA Cup 4-0 at Crystal Palace yesterday.

Campbell doesn’t believe manager Frank Lampard should take took much of the blame for the bad games because it has been a recurring theme this season.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the ex-Everton striker said: “I think the losses are the losses, it’s nothing new, it’s been happening all season.

“There’s only so much a manager can do. The players have to take responsibility. They just haven’t been good enough.

“When you look at the record that they’ve got it’s just not good enough for Everton Football Club.

“The manager’s going to take a fair share, of course he is, because as far as he’s concerned, he’s in it now, and Frank Lampard isn’t going to shirk that responsibility.

“But I think when you look at the players, the players have to have a really strong look at themselves in the mirror.

“Because you there, at a big club, you know what comes with it and you just haven’t performed. That’s the bottom line, they haven’t performed.

“So I think the players have to take responsibility for the results.”

Everton

Lampard has managed to bring about some memorable victories at Goodison Park since his arrival at the end of January.

But the away form continues to be appalling, and the home improvement has not been clear enough in league outings to avoid falling fully into the relegation battle.

But the players are the constant from the dreadful run under Rafael Benitez, and then briefly Duncan Ferguson, that saw them win once in the league between the end of September and Lampard’s arrival four months later.
