View: Mason Holgate should be axed by Frank Lampard, could mean he never plays for Everton again

Everton were once again embarrassed away from home after being smashed 4-0 in the FA Cup by Crystal Palace.

The Toffees now go into the international break down in the dumps, despite the ecstasy of the Premier League win over Newcastle just days before.

Frank Lampard will be left raging with his defence, with some of the goals behind shipped completely embarrassing.

Mason Holgate is one who needs to take a long, hard look at themselves.

The defender has been shocking alongside the heavily criticised Michael Keane, but at least the latter is popping up with goals and carries that threat consistently.

Holgate struggled immensely at Crystal Palace, completing only 61% of his passes according to WhoScored – the lowest of the back eight.

On top of that, he only won one of his aerial duels – with Keane and Ben Godfrey winning nine combined.

Never again?

With the season going into the final stretch, being dropped at this stage significantly increases the chances of Holgate not getting another start at all.

With interest from elsewhere too, Holgate could leave without another start behind his name between now and the summer.

Sky Sports shared back in January that Newcastle and Monaco, among others, were interested in a loan move.

That could become interest in a permanent switch in the summer, with much more time to play with to get deals over the line.

Given his level of performance right now, Lampard needs to take Holgate out of the spotlight, potentially changing his system along the way.

This five-at-the-back system clearly isn’t working, with more defensive players still not stopping is from conceding four at the likes of Palace.

It could be time for Holgate, among many others to move on, let’s see what happens between now and the end of the season.
