Stan Collymore takes completely unfair swipe at Richarlison as he looks to quit Everton

Not many Everton players can hold their heads up high this season and say that they have given their all for the club.

Anthony Gordon is, perhaps, the only player who can say he’s had a good season while Jordan Pickford hasn’t been bad either.

However, most of the rest have been woeful and decisions have to made on certain members of the squad in the summer transfer window.

One player who’s definitely not been at his best is Richarlison, who has underwhelmed time and time again this season.

The 24-year-old is easily one of the most talented players at Goodison Park but for one reason or another, he hasn’t shown it on a regular basis this term.

Whether that’s because he doesn’t want to be here – 90min reported on 22 March that he’s decided he wants to leave in the summer – or whether the lack of support from teammates have hindered him, we cannot say for sure.

But it’s without doubt that the former Watford attacker has lagged massively this term with just four goals in his 20 Premier League appearances for the Toffees.

Stan Collymore has picked out Richarlison in his latest column for The Mirror newspaper, suggesting that Frank Lampard may nee to call out the Brazilian for not playing well enough.

Writing in the Mirror on 22 March [page 51], Collymore said: “Managers can talk and talk but ultimately clubs such as Everton expect results and Lampard now needs to dig into one or two of his players – maybe even nine or 10 of them – to get the reaction he needs.

“We’ve been waiting for Brazilian striker Richarlison to have a great season since he arrived in English football but he hasn’t had one.

“Then there’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who won’t ever be England’s main striker. Can he carry Everon to where they want to be?”

While we half-agree with what Collymore’s said about Calvert-Lewin due to Harry Kane’s stranglehold on the England striker position, we cannot agree with his completely unfair swipe at Richarlison.

Yes, he’s been bad this season and yes, we did expect more from him last term when Carlo Ancelotti was in charge.

However, in Richarlison’s first twos season at Goodison Park in 2018/19 and 2019/20, he was fantastic.

In his debut campaign on Merseyside, the ex-Fluminense ace scored 13 times in 35 Premier League appearances. The season after, he equalled that tally in 36 games.

He was consistently good but yes, he has dropped off since then, we admit.

Richarlison was also superb in his debut season in English football when he burst onto the scene at Watford.

While he did drop off in the second half of the 2017/18 campaign, the Brazilian did score five goals and supply four assists in his first 13 games in English football as a young player.

So don’t give us that rubbish about Richarlison never having a good season in English football, Stan. He’s had more than enough.

He does need to do more but you can say that without making up weird, opinions about him based upon inaccuracies.
