Andros Townsend may have played final Everton match already after ‘devastating’ news

Andros Townsend’s career as an Everton player could effectively be over after his “devastating” injury blow on Sunday, according to The Mirror journalist David Maddock.

Writing in the print edition of The Mirror on 24 March [page 59], Maddock reported that Townsend, 30, is now battling an injury that can take from nine to 12 months to recover from.

Everton confirmed on their official Twitter account yesterday [23 March] that Townsend “will miss the rest of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury” in the 4-0 loss at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Maddock adds that Townsend’s contract expires next summer, meaning that even if he does recover from his injury earlier than scheduled, there won’t be much time left of next season for him to regain match fitness.

Awful news

Everton’s season has been pretty awful if you want us to put it lightly, but Townsend has been one of the brighter sparks for the club.

Many fans scoffed at the idea of signing the former Crystal Palace winger on a free transfer in the summer when Rafa Benitez was in charge.

However, given the fact that funds were tight, the experienced winger has turned out to be a half-decent signing.

Townsend has scored seven goals and supplied four assists in 27 appearances across all competitions for the Blues this season.

Everton

He’s been our top goalscorer in the Premier League but has clearly dropped down the pecking order a bit under Frank Lampard with Anthony Gordon taking his starting spot.

Still, for Townsend to be out for the rest of this season and what seems like the majority of next season is a massive blow for the Blues and the player himself.

We wish him all the best in his recovery.

In other Everton news, this Blues star may have just saved £70million for under-fire owner Moshiri.
