Alex Iwobi’s career is on the line for both Everton and Nigeria

The last time Everton played in the Premier League, Alex Iwobi was the hero for the Toffees but his career is still in desperate need of a revival.

The 25-year-old is no longer the rising star at Arsenal and he has to now push beyond his mediocrity and inconsistency if he wants to keep himself at the top of the game.

His 99th-minute winner against Newcastle United before the international break went some way to cementing his place in the Everton squad but it will take more than just one goal to do that completely.

He has to prove how effective he can be off the bench at Goodison Park if Frank Lampard is going to consider him to start anytime soon but his frustrating inconsistency is what has always held him back.

When the Toffees return, he has to prove that the magic Magpies moment wasn’t a flash in the pan and that he can do that every single week.

But it isn’t just for his club that the jury is still out for as he also has to start doing more when in the green of Nigeria too.

The Super Eagles take on Ghana in a two-legged World Cup qualifier this week looking to book their plane ticket to Qatar in November.

They had a poor Africa Cup of Nations in January though, bowing out in the quarter-finals, and Iwobi was a player who didn’t show up like he should have done in that tournament.

If the 25-year-old has any hopes of being the player that looked promising when he burst onto the scene at the Emirates, then he has to stand up and lead his nation to World Cup qualification and then return to spark Everton’s survival bid.
