Everton have to become sustainable after £120m losses

Everton released their accounts for the 2020-21 financial year on Tuesday (29 March) and it was not pretty reading for Evertonians.

The total loss recorded by the Toffees was an eye-watering £120.9million with COVID-19 cited as a key reason for the existential loss of money.

Luckily for Everton though, their profit to loss margin has been decreased thanks to the deep pockets of owner Farhad Moshiri who has put heaps of his own cash into the club’s coffers.

That’s all well and good now with the ability to spend hundreds of millions on transfers and wages but it can all go pearshaped extremely quickly.

Look at how Chelsea have found themselves up a certain muddy creek without a paddle after sanctions against Roman Abramovich has put their future at risk.

We’re not saying it is definitely going to happen to Moshiri too but why take the risk when you can be a more sustainable football club in generating their own income?

It is becoming increasingly more difficult in the Premier League but there are ways in which the club can greatly reduce their expenditure.

One thing that will surely help them is not chopping and changing their manager every season.

The club have paid big fees for some of football’s biggest managerial names such as Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez and neither were able to produce a team that could fight for European places like many Evertonians wish for.

Instead, they should be putting some faith in Duncan Ferguson who has twice stepped in at short notice to be caretaker manager without being offered the role full-time.

He might not be the tactical genius everyone dreams of having but there is no manager in the world who will get Everton players ready to fight like the big Scot can.

The academy stars could also get a fair crack at the senior team too rather than the club spending big money on players from elsewhere to do the same job.
