Everton relegation may mean £50m cuts plus Frank Lampard, Dele Alli and Jordan Pickford exits

Everton will have to cut costs by £50million if they are relegated, and five key figures could be in line to leave the club, according to The Telegraph.

A reported lack of relegation clauses in contracts means that high earners would be candidates to go, reportedly including manager Frank Lampard, as the club attempts to get inside financial fair play rules.

First team stars Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jordan Pickford are named as likely to receive offers, while Dele Alli’s future would be “in serious doubt”.

The Telegraph report says: “Sources close to the club recognise they would have to trim costs by £50 million to fall within profit and sustainability rules. However, there are denials at claims the drop would spark a fire sale of players, as other options are available to reduce overall spending.

“Brutal cost-cutting appears inevitable, however, for a club who have lost more than £100million for three successive years.”

Painful

As if anyone needed reminding why the club needs to be successful in this relegation fight, this report lays it out.

Some of these high earners frankly might have to go even if they do stay up, with the likes of Andre Gomes reportedly on over £100,000-a-week.

That sort of money is simply not justified for players failing to perform at the bottom of the league.

While the report says that the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium development would be unaffected, it really needs Premier League football played in it.

The club would apparently hope to keep hold of Anthony Gordon, and that is arguably more crucial than the big names.

Young talent like him is surely going to need to be the basis after a significant overhaul whether in the Premier League or the Championship.

There might seem like there is an argument to be made for a complete reset that relegation might bring about.

The consistently huge losses show cost-cutting is needed, and while it would be painful, there is currently very little to show for the expenditure anyway.

But it really never should have got to this point.
