Ben Godrey absolutely shocking, Richarlison shines – Everton player ratings v Burnley

Everton let slip of a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 at Burnley on Wednesday night as Frank Lampard’s relegation worries grew at Turf Moor.

Richarlison’s two first-half penalties put the Toffees ahead after Nathan Collins opened the scoring.

However, Jay Rodriguez and Maxwel Cornet made the most of ridiculously bad defending by the Blues to score and win all three points in a vital relegation showdown.

Here, Goodison News rates the players out of 10 for their performances:

Jordan Pickford – 4

Every. Single. Time. Whenever Everton have a big game to play, you just know that Pickford is going to do something to mess it up. He conceded the throw-in that Burnley ended up scoring their winner from and got nowhere near the home side’s three goals.

Jonjoe Kenny – 4

Terrible defending when Charlie Taylor got past him to make the cross for Rodriguez’s equaliser. It wasn’t Kenny’s worst performance of the season but the 25-year-old really isn’t good enough for the Premier League.

Jarrad Branthwaite – 5

Solid. Michael Keane’s absence led to 19-year-old Branthwaite getting his first start under Frank Lampard’s leadership. He impressed us considering the circumstances.

Ben Godfrey – 2

An absolute embarrassment. He got booked for timewasting when we were 2-1 up in the 54th minute. And then in the 85th minute, he failed to clear a simple cross and that led to Cornet’s winner. Shocking. Absolutely shocking.

Everton

Vitaly Mykolenko – 6

Mykolenko wreaked havoc on Burnley whenever he got forward and did very well to win the second penalty of the game. He’s started to show signs of improvement after a rocky start.

Mason Holgate – 3

Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Holgate offered nothing defensively, was suspect for Burnley’s first goal, looked as though he could’ve been sent off and did next to nothing in possession. Woeful and a real waste of a jersey.

Alex Iwobi – 4

We’re not sure how to rate Iwobi’s performance. He was great on the ball and did really well going forward. However, he lost Collins for Burnley’s first goal and could have done more to prevent their second. He’s not a central midfielder because he can’t do the defensive work. Ultimately, it was his failure to track Collins and Rodriguez that led to Everton dropping points and we can’t forgive Iwobi for that (yet).

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 4

Doucoure just doesn’t seem interested. The 29-year-old started the season strong but his two spells on the sidelines with an injury seem to have impacted his form. The ex-Watford man did nothing to stop the cross that led to Burnley’s winner. Embarrassing.

Everton

Anthony Gordon – 7

Yet again, Gordon was superb for Everton. How on earth did Lampard fail to start him at West Ham at the weekend? The 21-year-old won the first penalty that got us back in the game and continued to cause chaos for Burnley’s defenders throughout the game. Ran himself into the ground, eventually.

Richarlison – 8

It doesn’t sound too difficult, scoring a goal from 12 yards out. But Richarlison will have been under immense pressure to net both of those spot-kicks in the first half at Turf Moor and did so brilliantly. Richarlison almost scored a hat-trick when he attempted a bicycle kick that was well saved by Nick Pope.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 4

Anonymous. The best thing Calvert-Lewin did in that game was let Richarlison take the penalties because we’re struggling to think of any kind of contribution from the England striker.

Substitutes:

Demarai Gray (on for Gordon, 73′) – 5

Salomon Rondon (on for Holgate, 87) – 5
