Everton ‘shocking defending’ leaves ex-captain Kevin Ratcliffe stunned

Everton suffered a massive blow to their Premier League survival hopes last night as they were beaten 3-2 away at Burnley in a relegation six-pointer.

Richarlison scored twice from the penalty spot to give the Toffees a chance but it was poor defending that cost Frank Lampard’s side as the Clarets came from behind.

Jay Rodriguez and Maxwel Cornet turned the game around after Nathan Collins’ opener to give Sean Dyche’s side all three points and close to within one point of Everton on the brink of the drop zone.

Former Everton captain Kevin Ratcliffe was particularly bewildered at the Clarets’ winner as he reeled at the horror show of defending on display.

“Shocking defending like all season can’t keep a clean sheet,” Ratcliffe said via his personal Twitter account after Ben Godfrey horribly shanked his clearance of a cross before Cornet converted the winner.

Backs against the wall

If things weren’t precarious before they certainly are now and Lampard will be losing plenty of sleep over the position Everton are in right now.

One point above the drop and struggling to find any way to pick up even a point is starting to spell trouble for the Toffees.

For 68 years, Everton have been a top division club in England but the combined efforts of Rafael Benitez, this group of players and Lampard are threatening an end to that run.

These final nine games is where we’re going to see which of these players are going to have a successful career ahead of them.

Those who look to fight for the club’s Premier League status can stay whether it happens or not but there are some individuals who cannot get out of the door quickly enough through a lack of passion.
