View: Three things learnt in Everton shambolic 3-2 defeat to Burnley

Everton took one step closer to Premier League relegation for the first time in their history with tonight’s [April 6] Turf Moor capitulation.

Frank Lampard’s side fell to a 3-2 defeat against Burnley with Ben Godfrey’s shambolic defending handing Maxwell Cornet the opportunity to bag the last-gasp winner.

The Blues now sit even more dangerously close to the drop zone with just a one-point cushion.

Here are three things that we at Goodison News learnt from the game…

Away form is a disaster

This finally looked to be the game where the Blues ended their terrible away run. Leading 2-1 at the break despite going 1-0 down early was a huge confidence boost for Lampard and the players in particular and one they failed to capitalise on.

The Toffees haven’t picked up a single point on the road all year with their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in December the last time they had. You simply can’t surrender all of your away points for several months and expect to be in a healthy position at the table.

The performances are getting slightly better away from home week by week, but the results certainly aren’t.

Players are a joke

Honestly, these Everton players are abysmal. In each game, at least one player makes a ridiculous mistake that hands the opposition a goal. It is hard enough to win games with this squad and the current form they are in, never mind when you continuously help the opponents.

You have to feel sorry for Lampard. Tonight, the game plan was a good one. Everton did get somewhat lucky with their two penalties but it was a game-winning strategy from the boss. If it weren’t for the players sabotaging him on a weekly basis, he might find himself sitting a lot more comfortably tonight.

Watford is the key

Everton looks very likely to be relegated after that. All of the teams around them have shown a glimmer of fight in recent weeks with positive results and more importantly performances but Lampard’s side hasn’t.

You can argue Newcastle at home gives hope but they were awful that day and the Toon essentially gifted them that win. If they have to fight for it, they are as good as beaten.

There is one huge game Lampard has to get his squad up for, for the sake of his job and that is Watford. The Blues seem completely incapable of winning at the moment and games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea – to name a few – seem impossible.
