Duncan Ferguson can be Everton saviour, Frank Lampard should step back

It doesn’t take a genius to realise that things are not going to plan at Everton right now with Premier League relegation a real possibility.

Wednesday night’s 3-2 defeat away at Burnley, having been 2-1 up at half-time, brought Sean Dyche’s Clarets to within one point of the Toffees with only nine games left to play for both sides.

Frank Lampard will be incredibly worried that his side seems to have no clue how to pick up even a point away from home let alone all three with a victory.

It is clear that the former England international is unable to get his team fired up away from home and it is only the raucous home support that has helped with two wins at Goodison Park.

Maybe then in this time of desperate need, Lampard needs to take a step back and let one of Everton’s finest try and save the season.

Duncan Ferguson has proven before that his passion for the football club is almost unrivalled by anyone among the staff and players and whenever he has taken caretaker charge of the senior side, they have responded to that.

In the position Everton are in right now, they need his passion more than they need Lampard’s stature if they want to remain a top division club beyond the end of this season.

It would take a huge swallowing of pride for Lampard to take what might be a temporary hiatus for the good of the football club but it is exactly what is necessary right now.

If not, then Everton will be heading to the likes of Deepdale and The Den rather than Old Trafford and The Emirates.

In other Everton news, Anthony Gordon was fuming with his teammates after what he saw during the 3-2 defeat at Turf Moor.
