Gary Neville says Frank Lampard was ‘on the edge’ before Everton win v Manchester United
Gary Neville has said Everton and Frank Lampard were ‘on the edge’ of something ‘unbearable’, but thinks there has been a big swing in the relegation race now.
The Toffees earned a huge win over Manchester United on Saturday lunch-time to move four points clear of the relegation zone, with Burnley losing away at Norwich on Sunday.
Neville congratulated the blues for their huge win on his podcast and admitted that the players saved themselves from an ‘unbearable’ atmosphere had they been beaten.
“After that game in midweek you thought Manchester United will probably win at Everton or draw, and Burnley will probably go and beat Norwich now they’ve beaten Everton and you’d see Everton in the bottom three,” he said.
“But it’s not happened. So first thing is to say well done to Frank Lampard because I think he was on the edge, really on the edge.
“I think his players were on the edge of something that would have put them under massive, well they’re under massive pressure anyway.
“But to go into that bottom three with that crowd there, the intensity of them, it would’ve been unbearable. So well done to Everton.”
Momentum
Getting a win over an absolutely shocking Manchester United side at Goodison Park was great, but they need far more than that to get safety now.
Their run-in at the business end of the season is horrid, but the belief and level of performance they showed at the weekend is something to take solace from.

There was a big sign of commitment from the players as they ran through brick walls and gave everything to claim all three points, but now they must use that momentum to push on and get more points.
The players have proven that they can do it and there aren’t any excuses now about the quality of the squad or the level they can reach, because they can do it. They’ve shown that.
Neville is right that there has been a swing in the race for safety, but just as it swung in Burnley’s favour in midweek and back to Everton at the weekend, it’s not over and they must remain focused to ensure it stays in their favour.
