Gary Neville thinks ‘appalling’ Everton could make Liverpool title run-in easier

Gary Neville believes Everton could end up making Liverpool’s pursuit of the Premier League title easier, calling them ‘appalling’ despite their win over Manchester United.

The Toffees earned a momentous 1-0 win against Neville’s former side on Saturday to bounce back from defeat at Burnley and move them four points clear of the relegation zone with eight games to play.

But despite their win, Neville told Sky Sports on Sunday that Liverpool will be looking forward to playing them in the Merseyside derby later this season because they’re ‘appalling’.

“In the Premier League we’ve looked at City’s run-in and think ‘that’s an easier run-in’,” he said.

“But actually that’s because historically we’re looking at a Merseyside derby and a Manchester United game that ordinarily in any other season would be quite tough.

“Those two teams, to be honest with you, are appalling at this moment in time so they could be easier than any of the teams City have got. Watford are fighting for their lives, Leeds still have to win games, Newcastle…”

Ouch

The win over Man United has obviously hugely boosted morale around Goodison Park, but their home form has been good under Lampard and the win wasn’t that surprising.

It’s the form away from home that has been an absolutely huge issue for the club, having not won a single away game since August and lost every single one under the management of Lampard.

They still face trips to Watford as well as Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal this season and that could see their Premier League status plunged into further doubt.

Calling the Toffees ‘appalling’ isn’t a lie, because the vast majority of fans and pundits will agree that they simply haven’t been good enough this season when it comes to their performances.

But if they play in the same way they did on Saturday for the rest of the season, nobody will look forward to playing them and it’s now entirely on them to replicate that in the final eight games to save themselves.
